We are participating in the Geodesign project of the University of Oulu and the University of Lapland, funded by Tekes (the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation). This project studies the utilization of, for example, municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash in geopolymers. The geopolymers resembling concrete are produced using different types of industrial waste and by-products.
Geopolymers have various uses; they can be used as heat-resistant insulation, binding agents, in stabilising of chemicals, in water purification, and in infrastructure construction instead of concrete. It is estimated that geopolymer products containing waste materials will be introduced into the market in the next 5-10 years.
